Soirées Relations - March IssueMarch 1, 2019 — On March 12, the Centre justice et foi will hold an evening of reflection on the political crises that have shaken Latin America in recent months, between worsening socio-economic inequalities, migratory waves, the rise of authoritarian regimes, and threats to human rights.

During his recent stay in Panama, in the wake of the World Youth Days, Pope Francis spoke with Panamanian Jesuits, evoking with them the heritage of the theology of liberation and Christian social commitment in Latin America. Not without humour, he recalled the Mass he celebrated with the Dominican Gustavo Guttierez, the master of liberation theology, and the former prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, Cardinal Gerhard Müller, which would undoubtedly have been unthinkable some twenty years ago.

As well as the canonization of Oscar Romero, the opening of the beatification trial of Pedro Arrupe SJ and those, imminent, of Rutilio Grande SJ, and Dom Helder Camara, this evening will also highlight Jair Bolsonaro’s prophetic heritage in Brazil, as well as Central America and Mexico, the epicentres of the Migrants’ Caravan.
