Father Arturo Sosa Abascal, SJ, the 31st Superior General of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits) will be visiting Canada from May 18 – 30.
On his first official visit to Canada, Father General will meet with all provincial superiors of the Society of Jesus in Canada and the United States. Highlights of his visit to Canada include attending the ordination of Jesuit priests and deacons in Toronto and Quebec City, and visits to Martyrs’ Shrine and Sainte-Marie among the Hurons in Midland, Loyola High School in Montreal, Campion College and Mother Teresa Middle School in Regina, Regis College in Toronto, and other apostolates of the Jesuits in both English and French Canada.
Born in Venezuela in 1948, Father Sosa is the first Latin American Superior General of the Society of Jesus, the largest religious order of priests and brothers in the Catholic Church with more than 16,000 members.
Raised in a Catholic family that valued academics, he was encouraged to “to open up to the world, to study languages.” He speaks three languages and is passionate about the need for multiculturalism because “the true face of God is multicultural, multicolored and multifaceted. … If the Society succeeds in reflecting this diversity, it will become an expression of that fascinating face of God.
