Provincial's Dinner - Toronto

Wednesday, April 29, 2026

Toronto, ON

Dear Friends in Christ,

For nearly two decades, the Provincial’s Dinner has been a cherished gathering — a moment for friends, benefactors, and Jesuits to come together in gratitude and shared purpose. This year, as we prepare to meet once again at Bellvue Manor in Vaughan, our hearts are drawn not only to celebration, but to the men whose lives of quiet service continue to inspire us all.

Each Jesuit, whether in active ministry or in the later years of his vocation, remains a living witness to the mission entrusted to us by St. Ignatius — to seek God in all things and to serve generously wherever we are called. Many of our elder brothers, who have spent decades in classrooms, parishes, retreat houses, and missions across Canada and beyond, now need our care. It is both our privilege and our sacred responsibility to accompany them with the same compassion they have so long extended to others.

The reality is simple but profound: it costs approximately $60,000 each year to care for one senior Jesuit. Behind that number are the faces and stories of men who have baptized our children, taught our students, and offered wisdom and comfort in times of need. Your support ensures they receive the dignity, attention, and community they deserve.

We have our Annual Provincial’s Dinner each year to help support them and raise money to go towards their care. This year, it will be held on April 29, 2026. It is a lively night filled with great food, drinks and company where we celebrate those who always support us. This year, we will present the Magis Award to two remarkable individuals whose lives reflect the Ignatian values of love and service.

Katie (Catherine) Hogan

Katie has been a steady presence in Jesuit healthcare, especially during the transitions following the COVID-19 pandemic. She helped guide us through the closing of our infirmary in Pickering and the relocation of our men to other residences. In moments of uncertainty, she was the one we turned to for guidance and steady reassurance. Her care for our senior Jesuits has been personal and unwavering. She has given her time with quiet strength and generosity, always attentive to each man. Katie’s service has been a witness to the Ignatian values of what it means to care for the whole person.

Dr. Michael Vertin

Michael has been a trusted friend of the Society through his many years of teaching philosophy at the University of Toronto. Generations of students have been shaped by his patient guidance. His classroom was not only a place of study but also a space where Jesuits learned how to think deeply. His scholarship – especially in the thought of Bernard Lonergan, SJ – has deepened the dialogue between faith and reason. What stands out is not only his academic work but his kindness as a teacher and mentor. Michael’s lifelong commitment has strengthened the Jesuit mission in ways both profound and personal.

Every contribution — whether large or small — affirms a Jesuit’s lifelong service and reminds him that he is not forgotten, but deeply loved.

  • Sponsor the full cost of care for one Jesuit for a year ($60,000); or
  • Make a substantial contribution toward the ongoing support of our senior Jesuits.

Gifts can also be made in memory or in honour of a Jesuit who has touched your life — a lasting tribute to the bond between faith and friendship.

Together, we not only care for our elder brothers, but also continue the story of the Society’s mission in Canada — one rooted in love, gratitude, and hope. On behalf of all the Jesuits, I thank you for standing with us, in spirit and in generosity.

With deep appreciation,

Fr. Jeffrey S. Burwell, SJ
