The Church and Indigenous Peoples in the America Book CoverMarch 21, 2019 — On March 27, the book The Church and Indigenous Peoples in the Americas will be launched at McGill University’s Newman Centre in the presence of Professor Michel Andraos, editor of the book, Christine Zachary-Deom, former head of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawake, and Brian McDonough, lecturer at Concordia University and former director of the Office of Social Pastoral Care in the Archdiocese of Montreal.

Michel Andraos is an associate professor of intercultural theology and ministry at the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago and a member of the Jesuit Forum Advisory Committee on Reconciliation with First Nations. His research focuses mainly on the Church and indigenous peoples of the Americas and Christian communities in the Middle East.

This book builds on and enhances the papers presented at a conference held in November 2016 at the Center for World Catholicism and Intercultural Theology at DePaul University in Chicago, in partnership with the Catholic Theological Union. There are fourteen chapters, written by various authors, including Brian McDonough, a lecturer at Concordia University and former director of the Office de la pastorale sociale de l’archdiocèse de Montréal. It also includes a text by Eva Solomon CSJ, a religious of the Congregation of Saint Joseph and the eldest of the objiwe nation. She was one of the paddlers on the Canadian Canoe Pilgrimage, where she gave a moving testimony on the challenges of reconciliation.

This event is orchestrated by our companion Father John Meehan, SJ, Acting Director of the Newman Centre. A former president of Campion College, Father John is deeply committed to this process of reconciliation with Aboriginal peoples.
