On September 11, Fr. Mihály (Michael) Orbán, SJ, received the Hungarian Gold Cross of Merit, recognizing his dedicated service to Montreal’s Hungarian community.

The honour was presented by the Hungarian Ambassador to Canada on behalf of the President of Hungary. It recognizes not only Fr. Orbán’s pastoral ministry, but also his efforts to strengthen relationships across generations, organizations and Christian traditions within Montreal’s Hungarian community.

Fr. Orbán has deep ties to Montreal. After studying theology in Canada, he was ordained a priest here in 2000. He later served abroad before returning to Canada in 2021 to become pastor of Our Lady of Hungary Church in Montreal.

His ministry, however, extends well beyond the walls of the church.

Alongside his pastoral responsibilities, Fr. Orbán has supported initiatives serving seniors and young people, as well as the Hungarian school, scouts and dance group. He has also helped foster relationships among Christians through ecumenical celebrations, creating opportunities for Hungarians of different religious backgrounds — including those who are not active in a church — to encounter one another and remain connected to their community.

The ambassador described Fr. Orbán as “a steady pillar of the Hungarian community” and emphasized the time, energy and personal commitment he has devoted to its life.

His ministry also reflects the multicultural character of the Church in Montreal. Drawing on his linguistic abilities and relationships across the Church, Fr. Orbán regularly celebrates Mass for Romanian, German, Haitian, Italian and Syrian communities.

The recognition points to something at the heart of Jesuit ministry: being present to people where they are and building relationships across boundaries.

For Fr. Orbán, that means accompanying a community whose history in Canada stretches back generations while helping create spaces where people — young and old, Catholic and non-Catholic, newcomers and longtime members — can continue to find belonging.

In presenting the award, the ambassador thanked Fr. Orbán for leading through personal example and inspiring others through his service.

The Hungarian Gold Cross of Merit recognizes that service — and the community strengthened through it.
