March 14, 2019 — The famous Jesuit theologian Christoph Theobald will be teaching in Montreal next week. From March 22 to 24, he will give a lecture at the Dominican Pastoral Institute, a teaching inspired by his book Urgences pastorales (Pastoral Emergencies) published 2017 by Bayard Publishing (in french only).
Christoph Theobald SJ holds a PhD in theology from the University of Bonn and a PhD honoris causa from Université Laval in Québec (2011) and from the Université catholique de Louvain (2018). He is a professor at the Centre Sèvres, the Jesuit theological faculty in Paris. He is also editor-in-chief of the journal Recherches de science religieuse. In addition to his theological work, Christoph Theobald is a man in the field who is very committed to serving local communities. Through the diversity of his publications, highly specialized studies and works intended for the general public, Professor Theobald has demonstrated a great capacity for openness to several audiences.
In his most recent book, Urgences pastorales, he calls for reforms for both laity and religious in order to transform the Church. He’s also interested in inculturation and the proclamation of the Gospel in postmodern and secularized societies. It is this perspective that will be highlighted in the course he will give next week at the Dominican Pastoral Institute.
"First, this course will offer a diagnosis of the situation of our societies and communities in the context of postmodernity, to discern the possibilities of welcoming the Gospel and to hear in it the call, addressed to the Church, of a conversion. A second part will be devoted to this missionary conversion from the perspective of the experience of faith and its Christological and anthropological roots. In a third step, we will discuss the figure of a missionary Church and the pedagogical processes and ways of doing things that allow us to move forward in this direction."
