June 15, 2016 — Jesuits are always making news, and here’s
the latest roundup of recent awards and appointments about Jesuits from around Canada
and the U.S.
Jesuit Father Charles Allen, special
assistant to the president and university chaplain at Fairfield University in
Connecticut, received an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters degree from St.
Vincent’s College in Bridgeport, Connecticut, last month.
Fr. Allen has been an active member
of the St. Vincent’s community for many years as a celebrant for the
Baccalaureate Mass for college graduations and as a spiritual director for
Alumni Days of Recollection. Read

Jesuit Father Jean-Marc Biron,
provincial of the French Canada Province, accepted the Medal of the
Lieutenant-Governor for Exceptional Merit on his province’s behalf from the
Lieutenant-Governor of Quebec, the Hon. J. Michel Doyon.
The award, the highest medal the office can give, was presented to the province
for humanitarian service and for service to Quebec.
Jesuit Father Frank Haig, professor emeritus of physics at
Loyola University Maryland, was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award
from the Washington Academy of Sciences at its annual meeting in Washington,
D.C., on May 19.
Fr. Haig is a former president of the Washington Academy of Sciences and the
former president of Wheeling Jesuit University in West Virginia and Le Moyne
College in Syracuse, New York. Read

Jesuit Father Francis Hezel was awarded the inaugural Outstanding Contribution to Education in the
Pacific Award from the nonprofit Pacific Resources for Education and Learning,
for his extraordinary dedication to and support of education in the Pacific
region.
Fr. Hezel has worked in Micronesia since 1963, serving as a high
school teacher and school administrator at Xavier High School; pastor; and
regional superior to the Jesuits of Micronesia. Read

Jesuit Father Antuan Ilgit, a student at
the Boston College School of Theology and Ministry, has been awarded a 2016
fellowship from Fellowships at Auschwitz for the Study of Professional Ethics.
Fr. Ilgit will participate in a
two-week program in Europe this summer, using the conduct of the clergy in
Nazi Germany as a launching point to study ethical issues facing religious
leaders today. Read

Jesuit Father James Knapp, apastoral minister at Saint Louis
University, was honored last month with the Order of St. Louis King Award
from the Archdiocese of St. Louis.
He was awarded for his service as spiritual director and assistant
professor of theology at the archdiocese’s Kenrick-Glennon Seminary and for his
work with the Courage organization, a ministry for homosexual adults and

Jesuit Father Dorian Llywelyn has been named to lead the Ignatian Center for Jesuit
Education at Santa Clara University in California. Fr. Llywelyn will begin his
appointment on August 1.
Fr. Llywelyn has previously taught
undergraduate and graduate courses in Christian spirituality, theology and
culture, and ecclesiology and ecumenism at Heythrop College at the University
of London and Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. Read

Jesuit Father J. Donald Monan,
former president of Boston College from 1972 to 1996, was honored recently when
Boston College High School dedicated its baseball field in his name.
The park was renamed Monan Park because of Fr. Monan’s
outstanding educational leadership, vision and commitment to the City of
Boston. Read

Jesuit Father Thomas Reese, senior analyst for National Catholic Reporter,
and his colleagues on the NCR staff, received first place for best news writing on an international
event from the Catholic
Press Association.
The team received the award for their coverage of
Pope Francis’ environmental encyclical, “Laudato Si’,
on Care for Our Common Home.” Read
