News Story

October 3, 2016 — Today on
the feast day of St. Francis Borgia, third Superior General of the Society of Jesus, Fr. Adolfo Nicolás, SJ, 30th Superior General of the Society, submitted his resignation to General Congregation 36. After deliberations, the Congregation voted to accept his resignation.

Fr. Adolfo Nicolás, SJ (left), submitted his resignation as Superior General; he named Father James E. Grummer, SJ (right), Vicar General of the Society until a new general is elected.

Earlier that morning, Father James
E. Grummer, SJ, invited the members of General Congregation 36 to stand and
invoke the Holy Spirit by singing the Veni Creator, as they began their first plenary session.

Immediately after, he invited Fr. Nicolás to say a few
words. Fr. Nicolás said he was handing over the facilitation of the
Congregation to Fr. Grummer and that he had chosen him to be the Vicar General
of the Society until the election of a new Superior General. Fr.
Nicolás then opted to leave the rostrum and to sit among the other members of
the Congregation.

Each day, you can pray along with the members of
the Congregation using the Prayer Room section of www.gc36.org. [Source: GC36.org]
