The largely unknown late Algerian-French-Israeli politician, translator and Jewish interfaith activist André Chouraqui (1917-2007) was one of the pioneers of contemporary interfaith dialogue, among Jews, Christians and Muslims. Beginning in the 1940s, his interfaith work, combined with his lifelong fascination with languages and cultures, inspired him to produce a ground-breaking French translation of the Bible (both Testaments). Published in the 1970s, his translation has attracted considerable scholarly interest (and some controversy). In his recently published book, ”Restoring the Gospels’ Jewish Voice,” Murray Watson explores Chouraqui’s rich and fascinating life and his unique approach to Bible translation, especially grounding the Gospels — and Jesus — in their original Jewish context.
