I Am Alone … A spiritual conversation retreat facilitated by members of the Ignatian Spirituality Centre team. Join us for an exploration of the challenges and gifts of loneliness.
Being lonely is a reality that most of us face at one point in our lives. Perhaps you may recognize yourself in one of the following: I was married. I lost my spouse … I belonged to a religious community, and I left … I always consciously or unconsciously sought the ideal soulmate but … I’ve been in relationships, but they never seemed to work … I have made a decision to live life on my own but sometimes I get lonely…
But what if there were a hidden gift in befriending our aloneness? Could being alone, whatever form it may take be a positive and distinctive calling from God and not just a state one falls into because living a partnership has not been possible or even an option? Can loneliness be transformed into fruitful solitude? What is the difference? Is there a way to make deep sense out of being alone?
Our ‘Place to Belong’ retreats bring together people who are challenged in a similar type of journey. These are silent retreats in which we present four (4) scripture or relevant spiritual texts as a basis for reflection. We conclude each meditation with a voluntary sharing on your experience of the silent directed personal meditation.
Living your aloneness in a Christian context can be a challenge. You may find it difficult to find your place, deep wounds may come to the surface and leave you in a painful space. You may feel a wide range of emotions, such as … loneliness, abandonment, guilt, not belonging, exclusion to name but a few. Your role in community might remain ill-defined, and you may be wondering how to live your aloneness in an authentic way.
This retreat aims to cultivate and strengthen a spirituality that allows you to live a deeply intimate and personal relationship with God. You will explore Ignatian contemplative prayer together and will be able, if you wish, to share in spiritual conversation. Rather than finding a solution to what weighs you down in your loneliness, we will explore together the fruitfulness of solitude.
