Yes, 2020 is finally behind us. I hope your Christmas was happy, safe, and restful.
One of the most enjoyable aspects of my job is to be able to write to you monthly. I enjoy very much sharing news from the Jesuits with all of you, who so generously share your support and your prayers. Last year, I wrote to you with some words of wisdom from St. Ignatius. This year, I’d like to share with you how Jesuits are putting the instructions of their founder into action in Canada, by telling you about some of the work the Jesuits do in Canada for “The Greater Glory of God”, in the words of St. Ignatius.
The Jesuit Province of Canada, (religious congregations are divided into regional areas called Provinces for administrative purposes, and each Province is headed by a Provincial, ours being Father Erik Oland, SJ), comprises all of two countries – Canada and Haiti. In our Province, 189 Jesuits work in 26 communities, and minister in about 40 apostolic works and projects, in such diverse areas as parishes, retreat centres, Indigenous ministry, education, and social justice and ecology.
Over the next year, I will share with you some news and information on what these almost 200 Jesuits are up to, and I hope you will find their stories inspirational and compelling.
The Jesuits are grateful for your continued and generous support and pray for you daily. None of the good works happening in the Province of Canada would be possible without you.
May God bless you abundantly,
Barry J. Leidl
