Dear Friends,

During the month of March, we are well into the season of Lent; a time of prayer, fasting and almsgiving, a time to prepare for the joyful season of Easter, and the month when we honour a special saint.

The Patron of the Society of Jesus and the first Patron of Canada is St. Joseph.  We readily recall the great fiat of Mother Mary, but sometimes forget that same “YES” given by St. Joseph. This March, let us consider:

  • Would I have the faith & devotion necessary to trust and obey a tough message brought by an Angel?
  • Would I have the character and integrity to defy societal norms by marrying a young woman with child?
  • Would I drop everything in the face of oppression and flee to a foreign land to protect my wife and step-child?

As St. Teresa of Avila stated:

"Of all the people I have known with a true devotion and particular veneration for St. Joseph, not one has failed to advance in virtue; he helps those who turn to him to make real progress. For several years now, I believe, I have always made some request to him on his feast day, and it was always granted; and when my request is not quite what it ought to be, he puts it right for my greater benefit.”

In these times of peril and desolation throughout our world I ask you to pray to St. Joseph and provide him your request for the greater benefit of all.

I hope your Lenten preparations are consoling and will help deepen your relationship with God and each other.

The Jesuits are always grateful for your prayers and support.  They pray for you daily.

St. Joseph, patron of the Society of Jesus, pray for us!

Respectfully yours in Christ,
