Much has changed in society and within the Church since the 1900s but today, St. Ignatius’ community still includes a school, with the addition of an adult education centre, and continues to be a place to develop a greater spiritual relationship with God.
Outgoing Director of Martyrs’ Shrine honoured
December 17, 2015 — After five years as director of the Martyrs’ Shrine in Midland, Ontario, Jesuit Father Bernard Carroll, SJ, is retiring from the role, effective mid-February. More than 100 people in the community, including community leaders and politicians, came to wish farewell to Fr. Carroll, on December 14.
Countdown to a Congregation
In October of 2016, the Jesuits will choose Ignatius’ successor in Rome at General Congregation 36, or GC 36 for short. Although the 215 GC 36 delegates representing Jesuit provinces and regions around the world don’t meet for another year, the work of the congregation has already begun.
Canadian Jesuit appointed rector of Rome’s Pontifical Oriental Institute
August 27, 2015 - Canadian Jesuit Father David Nazar, SJ, has been named rector of the Pontifical Oriental Institute, the premier centre for the study of Eastern Christianity in Rome, Italy. Fr. Nazar is currently serving as superior of the Jesuits in Ukraine and is a former provincial superior of the Jesuits in English Canada Province.
Jesuits lead retreats for the homeless in 27 cities
August 17, 2015 — Spiritual retreats shouldn't be limited to the middle class, said Ted Penton, a Jesuit in formation. He leads retreats for homeless people through the Ignatian Spirituality Project (ISP), which runs in 27 North American cities. Penton visited Vancouver July 11-17 to see if it could be next.
