An Invitation to Be Pilgrims, Like Ignatius
A Bit of History
In 1521, Ignatius of Loyola was engaged in the defense of the fortress of Pamplona, on the border between France and Spain. During a skirmish, Ignatius was struck by a cannonball that shattered his leg. Finding himself in convalescence for several months at his father’s castle in Loyola, he began to pay attention to what was happening within himself and discovered discernment: there are inner movements that stir up in him forces of life, satisfaction, and joy; there are inner movements that provoke discouragement, fear, and sadness.
His observations laid the foundations for Ignatius’s spiritual adventure. Through contemplation of the mysteries of Jesus’s life, he learned to know himself more deeply and to become, like the first disciples, a “companion of Jesus.” Ignatius wrote down the Spiritual Exercises as we know them today. This little book is used—and, above all, adapted—by spiritual guides, in a language suited to our time.
This 8-day retreat follows the major stages of the Spiritual Exercises, which are usually experienced over 30 days. Eight days allow important paths to open for the journey ahead in our lives.
