Dear Friends,
As we journey through the sacred season of Lent, a time of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving, we are reminded of the profound significance of this period of preparation leading to Easter. March also holds a special place in our hearts as we honor St. Joseph, the Patron of the Society of Jesus and the first Patron of Canada.
In reflecting on St. Joseph’s role in the Holy Family, we often focus on Mary’s fiat but may overlook Joseph’s own profound “YES” to the Angel’s message.
This March, let us consider:
- Are there personal encounters, biblical passages that engage our faith and devotion as the angel did to Joseph?
- Would I have the character and integrity to defy societal norms by marrying someone with child?
- Would I drop everything in the face of oppression and flee to a foreign land to protect my partner and a stepchild?
St. Teresa of Avila once remarked, “Of all the people I have known with a true devotion and particular veneration for St. Joseph, not one has failed to advance in virtue.” She speaks to the transformative power of turning to St. Joseph in prayer, noting that he helps us make real progress in our spiritual lives.
In these troubled times, let us turn to St. Joseph, offering him our prayers and requests for the greater good of all. May his intercession bring comfort and strength to those in need, and may our Lenten preparations deepen our relationship with God and one another.
May this Lenten season be a time of spiritual growth and renewal for you and your loved ones.
The Jesuits are profoundly grateful for your prayers and support. Please know that the Jesuits remember you in their daily prayers, asking for St. Joseph’s intercession for you.
St. Joseph, patron of the Society of Jesus, pray for us!
Respectfully yours in Christ,
Scott McMaster
