Dear Friends,
August 2024 heralds a significant milestone for the Canadian Province as we conclude a thoughtful and prayerful process of consultation and discernment.
Fr. Jeffrey S. Burwell, SJ will have formally assumed his responsibilities as the new provincial of Canada with an inaugural Mass at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Toronto on July 31, 2024. Additionally, a special celebration will occur at the Jesuit infirmary in Richelieu, Quebec, on the Feast of the Assumption, August 15, 2024.
Father Burwell has faithfully served as a local superior since 2017 and a province consultor since 2021, he brings a profound insight into the Jesuit mission and a heartfelt appreciation for the diverse cultures of Canada and Haiti. His leadership begins at a time when the Society of Jesus is keenly focused on engaging with contemporary challenges through their Universal Apostolic Preferences: showing the way to God through the Spiritual Exercises and discernment; walking with the excluded; journeying with youth; and caring for our common home.
Father Burwell’s role extends beyond administrative duties to encompass the spiritual and pastoral care essential to guiding the province’s mission. The Canadian Province of the Society of Jesus embraces a wide array of ministries, including colleges/universities, secondary and pre-secondary schools, parishes, retreat houses, formation in spirituality, Indigenous ministries, social justice centres and ecological endeavours. Father Burwell’s rich life experiences will serve him well as he shepherds our ministries, laypeople, priests, brothers, and those we serve across our diverse province.
